Greeting is a kind of question or statement to begin a conversation. The greetings depend on the situation.
Example of formal greetings:
- We say "Good morning" when we meet someone early in the morning between 1 a.m. to 12 a.m. in the middle of the day.
- We say "Good day" when we meet someone in the middle of the day at around 12 a.m.
- We say "Good afternoon" when we meet someone in the afternoon between 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
- We say "Good evening" when we meet someone in the evening at around 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Formal:
- Good morning - Hello
- Good afternoon - Hello, good afternoon
- Good evening - Good evening
- Hello, how are you? - I'm fine thank you,
etc. etc.
Informal:
- Hi, how's life? - Terrific/ Great, and you?
- What's news? - Just fine, thanks.
- How's everything? - All right thanks,
etc. etc.
Nb:
- Formal: Mr./ Mrs./ Miss + nama keluarga. Marry Smith > Mrs. Marry (FALSE) but Mrs. Smith (TRUE).
- Hello=Hallo=Hullo=Hi (AS) and How do you do? which response good morning, good afternoon, good evening.
- How do you do? you can response How do you do? (untuk pertama kali bertemu/ berkenalan).
- Sir/ Madam (untuk orang terhormat/ atasan).
- How are you? >< I'm fine thanks. And, how are you? (British).
- Informal: thanks, formal: thank you.
- How do you do, Sir? = How are you, Sir?
- Quite well = I'm fine.
Example of conversation:
a. Formal
X: Good morning, Mrs. Smith.
Y: Good morning.
X: How are you?
Y: I'm fine, thank you.
b. Informal
X: Hello, Anna.
Y: Hello, Jack.
X: How are you?
Y: I'm fine, thanks. And you?
X: Fine, thanks.
